Innovation is the heart of Because International. Everything that we are about revolves around this thought, that we can do humanitarian aid better. Updating. Improving. Innovating. But the question remains: How do we do that? We believe this happens through the ideas, creativity, and ingenuity that come from people’s experiences, education, and life. This needs to include people who live in developed countries with the access to resources and include those who live in developing countries right in the midst of extreme poverty. So it is a combination of lots of different people, lots of different backgrounds, lots of different experiences and perspectives - and the best way to connect all of these things is through conversation. Therefore, the Innovation Conversation was born. There is a world out there in need of a better form of help and hope. We need to innovate new ideas for better products, tools, and strategies. The door to innovation lies in the ideas that we possess. The key to unlock those ideas is conversation. The Innovation Conversation is really just that: a conversation. It is getting people together to connect over a common goal. It is providing the opportunity for people to bring out the best ideas and solutions for these problems through mutual interaction and combination. It is… well, here’s what it is at a very tangible level. On a Thursday night at a local community college classroom, several people get together around a whiteboard. There is a topic written on the board – “MALARIA”. The leader of the group reads from a series of papers that she holds in her hands. She is reading first-hand accounts of people living in extreme poverty in Kenya about why the bednets that they receive don’t work and don’t make sense for their lives. After reading these accounts, the leader simple asks, “How can we make a better bednet?”. The group digs in. There are a couple of college students who traveled this summer to Africa who throw in their two cents. There is a retired missionary to Latin America who speaks from his experience. There are a couple people who are very passionate about ending malaria who bring their perspective. And there is great conversation about what we can do to fight malaria just a little bit better – a better bednet, a better plan, a better way. That’s what the Innovation Conversation is all about. But it all starts with conversation. It all starts with you. How It Works
The Innovation Conversation works through connecting people with other people for the purpose of a common goal. Certain Innovation Conversation groups will tackle specific problems. They will talk and think and create ideas for how to do things better.
Then this information is disseminated from these groups to the leaders at Because International. The best ideas are chosen and re-inserted back into the Innovation Conversation groups and relayed to people living in these situations. Ideas are refined and refined and refined. Finally, Because International will take the best idea for improvement and run with it. In very broad strokes, that’s how the Innovation Conversation works.
